The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured a final forfeiture order for 48 properties linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, following a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik held that the anti-graft agency had successfully established that the assets were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and were not acquired from legitimate sources of income.
Among the forfeited assets are Rayhaan University in Kebbi State, including its permanent and temporary campuses, the Vice Chancellor’s residence and Rayhaan Radio.
Other properties affected by the order include several luxury hotels, duplexes, commercial plazas, warehouses, large expanses of land in Kebbi and Kano states, filling stations, factories, residential buildings, and business establishments such as Azbir Hotel, Zeennoor Hotel, Rayhaan Agro Allied Factory and Al-Afiya Energy facilities.
The forfeiture case began in January 2026 when Justice Emeka Nwite granted an interim forfeiture order following an ex parte application by the EFCC. Although Malami and 14 of his family members and associates challenged the order and questioned the court’s jurisdiction, Justice Abdulmalik ruled that they failed to provide evidence showing the lawful sources of funds used to acquire the properties.
The court held that merely claiming ownership of the assets was insufficient in non-conviction-based forfeiture proceedings, paving the way for the final transfer of the properties to the Federal Government.
