Opposition party claims political violence escalating, demands international watchdog role
The Accord Party has urgently petitioned the European Union to step into Osun state’s spiraling political crisis just days before Saturday’s governorship election, alleging at least 29 people have been killed in violence linked to the political turmoil.
In a letter to EU delegation head Gautier Migot, party chairman Maxwell Mgbudem warned that the political atmosphere has “deteriorated dangerously” with widespread reports of arrests, intimidation, and harassment of opposition supporters.

“Early international engagement could help prevent further escalation,” Mgbudem stated, urging the EU to push Nigerian authorities for a “level playing field” and peaceful election.
The party insists the intervention should be “preventive diplomacy” rather than obstruction of legitimate investigations.
