He wore the uniform, flashed a pistol, and played the part—but Moferewa Maiye’s masquerade as a DSS operative came to a crashing end this week.
The suspect, who claimed to hail from Agbajojun Village in Kogi State, was tracked to his hideout near NITEL Junction, Wuse II, by real DSS operatives. His costume? A full DSS tactical uniform. His weapon? A fake pistol. His game? Intimidating commuters and motorists to squeeze out cash.
But his script fell apart under interrogation. Maiye told investigators the uniform and kit belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye—a genuine DSS personnel who died years ago. Whether that alibi holds water is now up to investigators, who are digging into how long he’s been running this dangerous con.
The suspect is still in custody, and the DSS says the arrest sends a clear message: impersonating security forces to extort and terrorize the public will not be tolerated.
