Non-denominational pressure group urges issue-based politics ahead of Nigeria’s general elections
A non-denominational pressure group, the Christian Conscience, has issued a strong warning to politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections, cautioning against campaigns that exploit ethnic and religious divisions.
The group emphasized that political campaigns should focus on addressing critical national development issues rather than promoting violence, intimidation, or deploying political thugs.
In a statement signed by National Chairman Yetunde Akinluyi and National Secretary-General Kolawole Verrals, the group called on politicians to present concrete plans for improving education, healthcare, and the economy.
“Politicians should campaign with issues, not insults. Nigerians deserve to know what candidates intend to do about jobs, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure and the economy,” the statement read.
With presidential and National Assembly campaigns set to begin on August 19, 2026, and state-level campaigns starting September 9, 2026, the group stressed that candidates must demonstrate competence and present credible ideas to voters.
Key Warnings:
· Avoid Ethnic and Religious Exploitation: Political leaders must resist weaponizing ethnicity or religion to gain advantage
· Reject Violence and Intimidation: Parties and supporters must refrain from using thugs or threatening voters
· Maintain Mutual Respect: Today’s opponent may be tomorrow’s partner in national development
· Focus on Track Records: Voters should scrutinize candidates’ policies, competence, and character
The Christian Conscience also appealed to Nigerians to remain objective in assessing candidates, urging them to demand substantive answers to the nation’s challenges.
This warning comes just days after the National Broadcasting Commission cautioned broadcasters and online publishers against spreading misinformation, hate speech, and inflammatory content that could undermine peaceful elections.
