The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has warned that the use of state institutions to influence Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could undermine democracy and public confidence in the country’s electoral process.
Mark made the warning in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI), which is assessing Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 polls.
He said the credibility of the elections must be “non-negotiable,” calling for polls that are transparent, inclusive, peaceful and free from intimidation, violence and manipulation.
The former Senate President also raised concerns about recurring interference in Nigeria’s electoral process by governments in power and non-state actors.
Referring to reports of violence during the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, Mark said the development should serve as a warning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that elections should allow citizens to freely choose their leaders and that mandates given by voters must be respected.
The ADC chairman said his party supported an electoral environment where voters could cast their ballots without fear, adding that every vote must count. The IRI delegation said its visit was aimed at assessing Nigeria’s preparedness for the 2027 elections and engaging major stakeholders on issues that could influence the conduct of the polls.
