Opposition party declares ruling APC a “runaway car heading to doom” as Senator Saliu Mustapha dumps party
The Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party has unleashed a blistering attack on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the All Progressives Congress following Senator Saliu Mustapha’s dramatic resignation, describing the ruling party as “fatally fractured” and on the verge of total collapse.
“Governor AbdulRazaq has failed his party just as he has failed the people of Kwara State,” declared PDP Publicity Secretary Olusegun Adewara in a fiery statement Friday.
The opposition didn’t hold back, likening the Kwara APC to a “runaway car heading to doom” and accusing the governor of treating fellow party leaders as “competitors that must be eliminated.”
A Party Built on ‘Lies and Deceit’?
Mustapha, a founding member of the APC and Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, submitted his resignation letter dated August 14, citing recent developments within the party in Kwara State. His departure marks one of the most significant defections from the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“What is happening to the Kwara APC today is not just political migration,” Adewara fumed. “It is the inevitable collapse of a party built on lies, deceit, image laundering targeted at innocent families, and evil propaganda of 2019.”
The PDP further claimed that the resignation of such a prominent serving senator “exposed the divisions within the ruling party” and proved that “its centre can no longer hold.”
‘Bold Step’ or Political Suicide?
In a dramatic call to action, the PDP urged other APC members still “trapped” in the party to follow Mustapha’s example.
“We call on every distinguished Kwaran still trapped in the APC out of sheer reluctance to leave to summon courage and take the bold step now,” Adewara declared. “Leave the skidding APC vehicle before it lands you in a political dungeon.”
The party also referenced the recent resignation of Ambassador Kolo Jiya and other APC leaders from Kwara North, framing it as evidence that “even those who helped build the APC have lost faith in Governor AbdulRazaq’s leadership.”
Governor’s Camp Silent
When contacted for comment, the Kwara APC spokesperson Babatunde Olawale said the party had yet to issue an official reaction. Meanwhile, efforts to reach Governor AbdulRazaq proved futile, as his Deputy Chief Press Secretary abruptly ended the call while our correspondent was still speaking.
Mustapha, who represented Kwara Central in the Senate, assured his constituents that while “my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged.”
His next political move remains unknown, though speculation is rife about a possible alignment with the PDP under the leadership of Bukola Saraki, the Waziri of Ilorin and former Senate President.
