Northern Senator Dumps NDC in Shocking Exit

Kano Central senator, sole northern voice in NDC, resigns without revealing next move

In a dramatic political twist, Senator Rufai Hanga, the only northern representative of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Senate and Deputy Minority Whip, has resigned from the party effective immediately.

The Kano Central lawmaker announced his departure in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the party chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa LGA, Kano State.

“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths,” the letter read.

Hanga’s exit leaves the NDC completely without representation in the Senate from northern Nigeria – a significant political setback for the party as it gears up for future elections.

The senator, who served as Deputy Minority Whip, thanked the party for its support but offered no clues about his next political move.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party,” he said.

“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences gained during our political activities together. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level.”

What’s Next for Hanga?

The big question on everyone’s lips: Where is he headed?

The senator remains tight-lipped about his future plans, refusing to disclose whether he intends to join another political party or pursue a different career path entirely.

Political observers are already speculating about possible defections to major parties, with many eyeing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as potential landing spots.

Political Implications

Hanga’s resignation is more than just a personal decision – it signals potential cracks in the NDC’s northern base and raises questions about the party’s viability in the region ahead of 2027.

With the 2027 general elections looming, every defection counts, and this one could trigger a domino effect among other party faithful.
