The Politics of Peace: Why Bayelsa Must Never Return to the Politics of Vindictiveness!!

The visit of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Pastor Senator Oluremi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to Bayelsa State for the flag-off of the NDDC/Renewed Hope Initiative Free Medical Outreach Programme in Otuasega, Ogbia Local Government Area in April 2025, was more than a ceremonial event.

It was a moment that reaffirmed what many Bayelsans have known for years. When she described Governor Senator Douye Diri as the “Man of Peace,” she gave public expression to a reputation the Governor has earned through his actions, his character, and his unwavering faith in God.

In an age where political power is too often equated with intimidation, vengeance and the suppression of opponents, Senator Douye Diri has chosen a different path.

He has shown that true leadership is not about wielding power against perceived enemies but about serving the people with humility, compassion and justice. His administration has become a living testimony that peace is not a sign of weakness but the greatest strength of a leader who fears God.

After the death of my father, I was privileged to grow up under the guidance of my late uncle, Dr. George Allen Fente, fondly referred to as the “Professor of Practical Politics” in Port Harcourt. From him, I learned the realities of political engagement, strategy and survival. Those early lessons shaped my political consciousness.

This year, 2026, marks exactly thirty years since I first contested an election. Three decades in active political participation have exposed me to different schools of political thought and governance. Yet, nothing prepared me for the refreshing leadership philosophy demonstrated by Governor Douye Diri.

He has taught us that a Governor can possess enormous constitutional authority without weaponising state power against political opponents. He has demonstrated that one can govern firmly without being vindictive; lead decisively without being oppressive; and remain humble despite occupying the highest office in the state.

Above all, he has shown that public office and public faith are not incompatible. He has never been ashamed to acknowledge Jesus Christ openly, whether in public worship or private devotion, reminding us that “except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

For decades, many of us grew up believing that politics was synonymous with revenge, that if someone offended you, government power became the instrument of retaliation. The infamous “you do me, I do you” philosophy became the defining culture of governance in many places.

Governor Douye Diri has courageously broken that cycle. Rather than deepen divisions, he has healed wounds. Rather than persecute opponents, he has extended the hand of fellowship. Rather than govern through fear, he has inspired confidence through peace.

Today, Bayelsa is witnessing unprecedented, quiet and inclusive development across the eight local government areas. Roads are being constructed, institutions are being strengthened, security has improved, and government has become more people-oriented.

These achievements have not been accompanied by unnecessary propaganda but by consistent and focused leadership. That is why his administration has often been described as delivering “prosperity without noise.”

More importantly, Governor Douye Diri has consistently dedicated Bayelsa State to the Almighty God, recognising that no government can truly prosper outside divine guidance.

The peace the state enjoys today is not accidental; it is the product of leadership that acknowledges God as the ultimate source of wisdom and authority. Proverbs 10:22 reminds us, “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” Indeed, the evidence of that divine blessing is visible across our dear state.

As Bayelsans prepare for the future, the choice before us extends beyond political parties and personalities. It is a choice between two philosophies of leadership. One is founded on peace, humility, reconciliation, development and the fear of God. The other is rooted in bitterness, intimidation, vindictiveness and the politics of settling scores.

History teaches us that societies prosper when righteous leaders govern. Bayelsa has experienced that reality. We must never return to the dark era where political power was viewed as a licence for persecution, division and endless political warfare.

The future of Bayelsa must remain anchored on peace, unity and God’s unfailing grace. We have seen what leadership under the fear of God can accomplish. We have witnessed how humility can produce stability and how meekness can strengthen governance.

The Bible declares in Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.” Today, the peace, stability and steady progress across Bayelsa are testimonies that righteous and God-fearing leadership still matters.

Bayelsa has been dedicated to God. The hand of God is evident upon our land. By His grace, we must continue to uphold leaders who fear Him, pursue peace and place the welfare of the people above personal ambition. We cannot afford to return to an era defined by vindictive politics and bitterness. The path forward is clear.

Bayelsa is for peace. Bayelsa is for progress. Bayelsa is for righteous leadership. Bayelsa belongs to God, and by His grace, we shall continue to move forward in Jesus’ name.
