Spain’s celebrations after winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup turned tragic when a 13-year-old boy lost his life following the collapse of a public fountain during victory celebrations in the western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight as thousands of football fans gathered to celebrate Spain’s historic World Cup triumph over Argentina. According to local authorities, a large number of supporters climbed onto a decorative fountain in the town square, causing the structure to collapse under the excessive weight.
Emergency services said they received multiple distress calls at around 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that the fountain had fallen on several people. Rescue teams, police officers and medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene to treat the injured and secure the area.
The municipal government of Ciudad Rodrigo later confirmed the death of a 13-year-old boy, expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement, the city council said what should have been a joyful celebration of Spain’s football success had instead become a heartbreaking event for the community.
Authorities also confirmed that several other people sustained injuries during the collapse. One other young person was reported injured and taken for medical treatment, while emergency crews attended to others at the scene. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Local media reported that the fountain gave way after dozens of excited fans climbed onto it while celebrating Spain’s first FIFA World Cup title since 2010. Images shared on social media showed crowds waving Spanish flags, singing and cheering moments before the accident occurred.
The incident has cast a shadow over nationwide celebrations that followed Spain’s victory in the 2026 World Cup final. Across the country, millions of supporters filled streets and public squares to celebrate the national team’s return to football’s biggest prize after a 16-year wait.
As investigations continue, local authorities are expected to examine the structural condition of the fountain and determine whether additional safety measures should have been in place during the public celebrations.
Messages of sympathy have continued to pour in from across Spain, with many football fans expressing condolences to the family of the young victim while also wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety during large sporting celebrations, where excitement can quickly turn dangerous when crowds gather around structures not designed to support heavy loads.
