The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, following the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the death of Mr. Mene Ogidi and sparked public concern over police conduct and the use of force.
In an official statement released on April 29, the Force confirmed that all officers linked to the shooting were immediately withdrawn from duty in Delta State and redeployed to Abuja for investigation.
According to the statement, the directive was issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who mandated an expedited review of the case. The officers were subjected to disciplinary procedures led by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).
Findings from the committee established that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, violated established police regulations, including Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms.
The report described his actions as unlawful and unprofessional, noting that they constituted a serious breach of the duty to protect life.
Based on these findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.
The Inspector-General has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for final ratification in line with due process.
Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers are expected to be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in what has been described as an extrajudicial killing.
The police leadership reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power, emphasizing that no officer has the authority to take life outside the provisions of the law. It warned that any violation of this principle would attract both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The Inspector-General also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that justice would be pursued transparently to restore public confidence.
In the statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the public was urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the Force continues efforts to uphold professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.
