Abia State has pulled the plug on commercial motorcycles, banning all okada operations in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia starting June 22, 2026 a sweeping crackdown citing spiraling security threats and urban chaos.
Governor Alex Otti approved the draconian measure, which forces every commercial bike operator to clear out of the metropolitan zones before the deadline or face arrest and immediate confiscation of their motorcycles.
“This is non-negotiable,” declared Information Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu, framing the ban as a cornerstone of the administration’s strategy to bulletproof security, crush traffic mayhem, and rewire the state’s chaotic transport system.
Security forces have been placed on red alert to enforce the order, with authorities pleading for public cooperation while warning violators they will be hunted down. The government insists the trigger was the alarming surge in criminal elements hiding behind okada operations a menace officials say has spiraled beyond control.
Residents and transport unions now brace for impact as Abia draws a hard line order or arrest, no middle ground.
