Former Delta Governor throws weight behind President’s security reform, describes it as historic devolution of power
Immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s push for state police, describing the reform as a courageous and historic step toward tackling Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Stakeholders’ Meeting in Asaba on Friday, Okowa revealed that the agitation for state police has been ongoing since 2000, with previous administrations lacking the political will to implement the reform.
“The agitation for state police started as far back as the year 2000. No president had been bold enough to allow the devolution of power. But this president is bold enough to say that this is the best way to ensure that we are able to secure the land,” Okowa stated.
‘State Police Will Complement Federal Force’
The former governor emphasized that the proposed system would work alongside, not replace, the Nigeria Police Force.
“We are not talking about ending the federal police. Let each state have its own police, committed to its people, properly trained, properly armed and dedicated to securing the land,” he explained.
Okowa stressed that Nigeria requires leaders willing to make difficult decisions in the national interest, adding: “We want a president who is able to take bold decisions that will secure today and the future. The lives of Nigerians matter more than what is politically correct.”
Delta APC Endorses Tinubu, Oborevwori for Second Terms
In a major political development, the stakeholders’ meeting unanimously endorsed President Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for second terms in the 2027 general elections.
The motion was moved by APC House of Representatives candidate for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, and seconded by Mr. Frank Esenwa.
Deputy Governor Calls for Party Unity
Delta State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, urged party members to reconcile with aggrieved aspirants who lost during primaries and work together for the party’s success.
“We need state police because the federal police cannot reach all the nooks and crannies. Today, it is becoming a reality. Who made that possible? President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Onyeme declared.
APC Delta State Chairman, Chief Solomon Areyenka, and Delta North Chairman, Mr. Dan Ossai, also called for unity and diligence ahead of the 2027 elections.
