The lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, has strongly condemned the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Oghenemine Ogidi, in Effurun area of Delta State.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the senator described the incident as “heinous” and demanded swift justice for the deceased, who was reportedly killed on April 26, 2026, in Effurun. Ogidi was said to be a native of Ujevwu in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.
Dafinone expressed “deep shock and profound sadness” over the incident, stressing that the sanctity of human life must be upheld at all times, particularly by security personnel tasked with protecting citizens.
He criticized what he described as reckless use of force, warning that such actions undermine public trust in law enforcement.
The senator extended condolences to the bereaved family and the wider Udu community, noting that the loss was both tragic and avoidable.
“No parent should have to endure the pain of burying a child under such circumstances,” he said, while assuring the family of his support in the pursuit of justice.
He called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, including the Inspector General of Police, Disu Olatunji, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police, to launch a “comprehensive and transparent investigation” into the killing.
According to him, any officer found culpable must be held accountable under the law.
Dafinone also disclosed that his office would engage directly with police authorities to monitor the progress of the investigation and ensure due process is followed.
While urging law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, the senator appealed to residents of Udu and surrounding areas to remain calm and law-abiding.
He emphasized the need to allow investigative authorities to carry out their duties without interference.
The senator further called on security personnel operating within the district to adhere strictly to professional standards and rules of engagement, reiterating that the primary duty of security agencies is to protect lives and uphold citizens’ rights.
The incident adds to growing concerns about alleged cases of excessive use of force by security operatives in parts of Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for accountability and reforms within the policing system.
