BY AUSTIN OYIBODE, ASABA

Sometime in August 2023, Governor Sheriff Oborevowi of Delta state mooted the idea of purchasing electric vehicles for use in the state. Specifically, the idea was mooted on August 8, 2023 when the governor received in government house the management of Jet Systems Automobile Industry Ltd. The idea came following the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government. With that announcement, the prices of fuel and other consumables rose. And for the governor to assist Deltans, the idea of electric vehicles which is believed to be less fuel consuming was birthed.

For the governor, the deployment of electric vehicles is a great solution to the crisis rising from the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.  The governor said that as a forward-thinking state, his government was considering a partnership with Jet Systems to assist transporters in the state to adopt the use of EVs for mass transit. He said that the partnership with the automobile would help to alleviate the hardship being faced by the people as a result of the subsidy removal. He emphasised the several advantages inherent in the electric vehicles as against the fossil fuel engine motors.

The governor, who took a test drive of the vehicles, said: “This is the first time I have the opportunity to drive electric vehicles and you can see that it’s smooth, noiseless and comfortable, and with the way the price of fuel is going up, electric vehicles are better at this time because everybody is trying to move away from fuel to save cost.

A few weeks back, some officials of the state government were in China in furtherance of the move to procure the vehicles for the state. Special adviser on transport, Jaro Egbo; Onoriode Agofure, commissioner for transport and others were part of the entourage to China.

This move by the state government is seen as a significant step towards sustainable development, economic growth, and environmental conservation. As a key player in Nigeria’s economy, the governor’s decision to go in that direction shows the governor has recognized the potential benefits of transitioning to EVs and is strategically investing in this clean technology.

Research shows that there are several compelling reasons why Delta state should invest in the electric vehicles. One of such is environmental conservation: One of the primary reasons the state is looking in that direction is to reduce its carbon footprint and combat air pollution. Traditional vehicles powered by fossil fuels contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, which are major drivers of climate change. By promoting EVs, which produce zero emissions, Delta state can significantly decrease air pollution levels and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.

Delta state’s investment in electric vehicles is also motivated by the desire to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. As a region rich in oil and gas reserves, Delta state, like others, has long been reliant on imported petroleum products for transportation. By transitioning to electric vehicles, the state can diversify its energy sources and reduce its vulnerability to fluctuations in global oil prices and supply disruptions.

The adoption of electric vehicles presents opportunities for economic growth and job creation. By investing in EV manufacturing, assembly plants, charging infrastructure, and related industries, the state can stimulate economic activity and create new employment opportunities for its residents. The EV value chain encompasses a wide range of sectors, including battery manufacturing, renewable energy generation, transportation services, and software development, all of which can contribute to job creation and economic diversification.

Again, Delta state’s investment in electric vehicles reflects a commitment to technological innovation and research. EVs are at the forefront of automotive technology, incorporating advancements in battery technology, electric motors, autonomous driving systems, and vehicle-to-grid integration. By investing in EVs, Delta state can foster collaboration with research institutions, universities, and private sector companies to develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions that can drive progress in the transportation sector.

The deployment of electric vehicles aligns with Delta state’s vision for sustainable urban development. As urban centers in the state continue to grow, the adoption of EVs can help alleviate traffic congestion, reduce noise pollution, and improve air quality. Electric buses, taxis, and shared mobility services can offer sustainable transportation options for residents, reducing the reliance on private cars and promoting a more efficient and environmentally friendly urban transportation system.

Delta state’s investment in electric vehicles is also influenced by global trends and commitments towards decarbonization and sustainable development. Countries around the world are increasingly embracing EVs as a key strategy to achieve climate targets, reduce air pollution, and promote renewable energy adoption. By aligning with these global trends, Delta state can position itself as a progressive and forward-thinking region that is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.

The transition to electric vehicles in Delta state can have significant public health benefits. Reduced emissions from EVs can lead to improved air quality, lower rates of respiratory illnesses, and a decrease in premature deaths associated with air pollution. By investing in EVs, Delta state can safeguard the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.

However, as the state embraces the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and transitions towards a more sustainable transportation system, the state’s road infrastructure plays a crucial role in facilitating this transition. The state of roads in Delta state is a fundamental consideration as the government promotes EVs, as well-maintained roads are essential for the successful integration of electric vehicles into the transportation network.

Delta state, like many regions in Nigeria, faces infrastructure challenges, including road quality, maintenance, and connectivity. Some roads in the state are in poor condition, with potholes, uneven surfaces, and inadequate signage, which can pose challenges for electric vehicle owners. Smooth and well-paved roads are essential for the efficient operation of EVs, as they provide a stable and comfortable driving experience and help extend the range of electric vehicles by reducing energy consumption.

The availability of charging infrastructure along major roads and in urban centers is essential. Electric vehicle owners require convenient access to charging stations to recharge their vehicles, especially during long-distance travel or for those without home charging capabilities. The state of roads in Delta state will determine the feasibility of installing charging infrastructure and integrating it into the existing road network.

The condition of roads directly impacts road safety for all motorists, including electric vehicle drivers. Well-maintained roads with clear road markings, signage, and lighting enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents. Proper road maintenance and safety measures are critical for promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and ensuring a safe driving environment for EV owners and other road users.

The state of roads is closely linked to urban planning and development strategies. As the state embraces electric vehicles and sustainable transportation solutions, urban planners must consider road design that accommodates EV infrastructure, such as charging stations, dedicated lanes for electric buses, and smart traffic management systems. Coordinated efforts between transportation planners, policymakers, and road authorities are essential to ensure that road infrastructure supports the integration of electric vehicles into the transportation network.

Well-designed and maintained roads contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing energy consumption, emissions, and noise pollution. As Delt plans towards deploying electric vehicles, road infrastructure that supports eco-friendly transportation modes is essential for achieving sustainable development goals, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting clean air quality.

The state of roads plays a critical role in the successful integration of electric vehicles into the transportation system. The government should prioritize road maintenance, safety improvements, charging infrastructure deployment, and urban planning initiatives to support the transition to electric vehicles. By investing in road infrastructure that is conducive to electric vehicle adoption, Delta state can create a more sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation network that benefits residents, the economy, and the environment.
