The Delta State Government has announced that its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) increased from about ₦84 billion in 2023 to more than ₦200 billion, representing a growth of over 138 per cent, driven by reforms and economic diversification initiatives under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.
The government disclosed this on Tuesday following an assessment visit by a delegation from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), which evaluated the state’s economic diversification and revenue generation strategies in Asaba.
According to the state government, the significant increase in revenue reflects the administration’s commitment to reducing dependence on oil earnings and building a more sustainable economy.
“Delta State has grown its Internally Generated Revenue from about ₦84 billion in 2023 to over ₦200 billion, a remarkable increase of more than 138 per cent, driven by strategic reforms and economic diversification under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda,” the statement said.
The government noted that the achievement was highlighted during the RMAFC delegation’s visit to the state capital on Monday.
It added that the commission praised the state’s deliberate investments in non-oil sectors, particularly agriculture, industrialisation and innovation.
“During the visit, the Commission commended Delta State’s deliberate investments in agriculture, industrialisation, innovation and other non-oil sectors, describing the state’s diversification drive as a model for building a resilient economy and achieving sustainable long-term growth,” the statement added.
The development comes as states across Nigeria intensify efforts to strengthen their internally generated revenues and reduce reliance on monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda—an acronym for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security—places emphasis on infrastructure development, economic growth, human capital development and improved governance.
Since taking office in May 2023, the governor has consistently promoted economic diversification as a key strategy for improving the state’s fiscal position and ensuring long-term economic stability.
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission is the constitutional body responsible for monitoring revenue accruals, reviewing revenue allocation formulas and advising governments on measures to enhance revenue generation and fiscal sustainability across the country.
