Days after Supreme Court judgment, militants move to launch attacks on oil facilities in Rivers

Days after the judgement of the Supreme Court which recongnised Martins Amaewhule as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, some militants operating in the state have threatened to launch attacks on the nation’s oil assets.

The militants under the aegis of the Niger Delta Rescue Movement (NDRM) warned the government at the national level and other key players in the Rivers’ political crisis to steer clear from the affairs of the state.

In a video trending on social media platforms, the NDRM said its members will launch attacks on oil facilities in the state should the Central Bank of Nigeria fail to release the state’s allocation as at when due.

Recall that Amaewhule had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Rivers State governor, Simimilayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget to the House of Assembly.

The lawmakers ultimatum to the governor came shortly after the Supreme Court’s judgment on the crisis rocking the state.

However, in a video shared on Thursday, the militants’ suspected leader said, “It has come to our attention that certain individuals proclaim as lawmakers have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state governor to present the 2025 state budget.”

Describing Amaewhule-led Assembly’s ultimatum to Fubara as an attempt to destabilise the state, the militants said moves to disrupt the smooth running of existing governance system in Rivers would not be tolerated.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to intervene immediately and put a stop to the action of the minister, Nyesom Wike, and his associate, whose intent is to drag Rivers State to avoid a crisis—the people of Rivers State like stability, progress and a conducive environment for governance,” the militant leader said.

He also urged non-indigenes of Rivers State to consider their safety and leave the state promptly as the state cannot continue to generate money only to be denied of its right by the government at the national level.
