Kogi West: Senator Dino Melaye reacts to Appeal Court judgement

Senator Dino Melaye, one of the most controversial Senators in Nigeria has reacted to his lost at the Appeal Court on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. The Appeal court dismissed his appeal against Senator Smart Adeyemi. Dino is of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) while Smart Adeyemi is of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dino Melaye came into the Senate in 2015, having defeated Smart Adeyemi then. In the Senate, he was one of the most controversial and outspoken on the floor of the Senate. Then, he was in the All Progressives Congress, but he never allowed any opportunity to condemn actions of the federal government which were not in tandem with the democratic principles of a good nation.

He was always critical of the government, telling truth to power without fear or favour. This action of his made the presidency to have some dislike for him but the Nigerian people love him because he was always critical of the wrong actions of the government and telling the truth to the people in power. All over the nation, he is loved by everybody. Nobody hears the name, Dino Melaye without showing regard for the bearer of the name. Yes, that is Dino for you. Anytime he stands up, people cheer him up and clap for him.

On the floor of the Senate, Dino Melaye will never bend the truth. He says the truth no matter whose ox is gored. He would point the errors in the government and tell the presidency what is right and what ought to be done for the good of the Nigerian people. This is what endeared him to all Nigerian people. And following his criticism of the presidency, he suffered terribly in the hands of the security agents, bot the police and the Department of State Security (DSS).

He was badly treated as a common criminal, making many Nigerians to think if he was a Senator or an ordinary Nigerian and that if a Senator could be treated like that, what could become of the average Nigerian, who has no political power nor influence of any kind. His fight while in the National Assembly was actually for the common Nigerian who is vulnerable and lacks basic amenities of life.

He was formerly of the APC but with the heat of troubles on his head while in the Senate, he had to defect to the PDP with many others, like the ougone Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Shehu Sani and some others. They left the APC for the PDP. But unfortunately for all of them, they lost their return to the Senate in the 2019 general election.

For Dino Melaye, he was returned after the 2019 elections but his opponent in the APC, Smart Adeyemi, took the case to court and he won. Dino Melay filed an appeal at the Appeal Court and Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Appeal Court dismissed the petition as it lacked merit. After the court dismissed his appeal, he made a statement, calling on Nigerians and his sympathisers not to be worried.

His reaction reads thus: “I lost my election petition in the court of Appeal this afternoon. God is always right. He will do a new thing in His own time. There will be a new order and the judgement did not in anyway erase the rigging, bloodletting, killings and violence that dominated the election. I thank the ever courageous people of Kogi West who truly voted for me. I love you all and God bless you. God be praised forever and my Faith in Him remain constant. SDM.”
