Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, has accused the Federal Government of scheming to prevent him from contesting the 2027 election.
Speaking at Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, Obi claimed powerful interests within the government were determined to keep him off the ballot.
“If you know what they are doing to ensure I’m not on the ballot in 2027, you will be surprised. The Nigerian government is doing everything to ensure I do not contest, but I’m focused on the destination,” he said.
Obi’s allegation follows a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside an earlier order directing INEC to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party. He insisted the decision would not derail his aspirations.
“They cannot stop me. They will fail. Those who want to kill this democracy are trying to hurt society, but the will of the people must prevail,” Obi declared.
The former Anambra governor also challenged President Bola Tinubu and other presidential hopefuls to a public debate on their plans for Nigeria, stating his interest was driven by a desire to rebuild the country not personal ambition.
“I’m not desperate to be President but desperate to see Nigeria work. Do not vote for me because I’m Igbo vote for me because I’m the most qualified,” he told supporters, urging them to obtain their PVCs.
APC Fires Back
The All Progressives Congress rejected Obi’s claims, warning him against undermining democratic institutions.
APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru said: “He cannot seek to rule Nigeria while undermining the judiciary. Whether a judgment favours you or not, it must be respected. The same court that granted the order has set it aside why drag the President into this? He should pursue his case in court.”
