The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a planned power shutdown at its Katampe 132/33kV Transmission Substation this Saturday, leaving several parts of the Federal Capital Territory in the dark for seven hours.
The outage, scheduled to run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, is part of a crucial preventive maintenance exercise aimed at safeguarding the substation’s 100-megavolt-ampere (MVA) 132/33kV Power Transformer (TR1), along with its auxiliary systems and associated switchgear. According to TCN, the routine but essential work will ensure the longevity and reliability of the equipment, which plays a pivotal role in bulk power transmission to the Abuja metropolis.
In a statement released on Saturday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the maintenance crew would be working rigorously to complete the task within the stipulated timeframe. She, however, noted that the exercise would temporarily disrupt bulk power supply to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which serves as the off-taker for the affected regions.
Areas to Be Affected:
Residents and businesses in the following locations should brace for a total blackout during the maintenance window:
· Mpape
· Maitama
· Jahi
· Life Camp
· Kado Fish Market
· Idu-Karmo
· And adjoining communities
Mbah emphasised that the outage, though inconvenient, is non-negotiable for system stability. “Equipment maintenance is not optional—it is essential to guarantee optimal performance and prevent catastrophic failures that could lead to prolonged outages in the future,” she said.
The TCN assured customers that power would be fully restored by 4:00 pm, barring any unforeseen technical hitches. The company also appealed for patience and understanding, reiterating its commitment to delivering a more stable and efficient power grid.
This planned interruption comes amid growing calls for improved power supply across the country, and TCN has urged affected customers to make necessary arrangements to minimise disruption to their daily activities.
