The Ekiti State Police Command has announced a statewide restriction on vehicular movement ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
In a statement issued on Friday in Ado-Ekiti, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said the restriction would be in effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day.
The directive covers both intra-state and inter-state roads across the state.
According to Abutu, the measure forms part of the security arrangements designed to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and violence-free electoral process.
The restriction applies to all motorised vehicles, including private and commercial cars, trucks, tricycles, and motorcycles.
However, students and candidates sitting for national examinations on the same day will be exempted and allowed to travel to their examination centres.
The police advised travellers planning to pass through Ekiti on election day to make alternative travel arrangements and use different routes.
Abutu noted that accredited officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ad hoc staff, journalists, election observers, medical personnel, emergency responders, and other essential service providers would be permitted to move during the restriction period, provided they possess valid identification and clearance tags.
He also stated that VIPs accompanied by armed escorts would not be allowed access to polling units or collation centres.
In addition, construction companies handling road projects within the state have been directed to suspend active operations for the duration of the election as a precautionary safety measure.
The police spokesperson further explained that only personnel from recognised security agencies and organisations operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) would be authorised to provide security at polling units, collation centres, and other election-related facilities.
