The death of a 20-year-old mother of two in Nigeria has sparked renewed concern over domestic violence after police arrested her husband over an alleged fatal assault.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where police say a domestic dispute ended in tragedy. The woman, whose identity has not been officially released by authorities, was reportedly assaulted during an argument at home.
According to the Nasarawa State Police Command, officers were alerted to the incident and quickly arrived at the scene. The victim was taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia for medical examination, where her death was confirmed.
Police arrested the woman’s 30-year-old husband, Musbawu Amodu, in connection with the incident. Investigators said he allegedly admitted during questioning that an argument between the couple escalated into violence. Authorities said he later expressed remorse.
The couple had reportedly been married for about six years and are survived by two young children—a boy and a girl—whose lives have now been permanently changed by the tragedy.
The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full and expedited investigation. Police said the suspect will be charged in court if the investigation establishes sufficient grounds for prosecution.
Condemning the incident, the police described domestic violence as a preventable tragedy and urged families to resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than violence. The command also reassured residents that the situation in the community remains calm while investigations continue.
The heartbreaking case has once again drawn attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence across Africa, with advocates calling for stronger awareness, early intervention, and greater protection for victims.
