In a bid to promote ethical journalism and uphold professional standards during the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, the Anambra Patriots For Soludo (APS) in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, organized a one-day training workshop for over 100 journalists.
Held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Center in Awka, the event was designed to equip journalists with the tools needed for balanced, factual, and safe election coverage amidst the growing challenge of misinformation and media bias in the digital age.
The workshop brought together seasoned media professionals, electoral experts, and public stakeholders who shared insights on journalistic ethics, risk assessment, and the role of the media in sustaining democracy.
In his keynote address titled “The Role of INEC and Fundamental Role of Journalism in Election Coverage,” legal expert Barr. Dr. Moses Ugboh emphasized the importance of fairness, balance, and accuracy in media reporting. He urged journalists to leverage their own verified social media platforms to counter fake news and misinformation, encouraging them to arrive early at events and source credible information to maintain journalistic integrity.
On safety, Sir Victor Agusiobo, former Managing Director of National Light, in his lecture “Physical Safety and Risk Assessment,” advised journalists to remain vigilant and proactive in the field. He stressed the need for proper risk assessment and the de-escalation of conflicts during news coverage.
Convener of APS, Arch. Okey Ezeobi, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s leadership, describing him as a visionary who has transformed Anambra State. Ezeobi, who also heads the Anambra State Bureau of Public Procurement, said the governor’s developmental strides were clear and deserving of continued support. He charged journalists to reflect fairness in election coverage.
Chairman of APS, Chief Damian Ejiamatu, reiterated the group’s commitment to promoting Governor Soludo’s second-term bid, highlighting reforms that have impacted all 21 LGAs of the state. He encouraged journalists to help spread the governor’s success stories across the state.
Also speaking at the event, HRM Igwe Pius Omachonu, Secretary of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, urged journalists to remain steadfast, courageous, and truthful in their reporting, especially in politically charged environments.
Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, the Resident Commissioner of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, commended the initiative, noting its timeliness as the November 8 polls approach. She lauded NUJ for its professionalism and encouraged continued fairness in coverage.
Mr. Christopher Molokwu, MD of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), highlighted the need for journalists to fight the spread of misinformation and ensure the public has access to credible news.
Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the Anambra State NUJ, expressed appreciation to APS for its support and stressed the need for journalists to reject undue influence from political actors. He reiterated the role of the press as an unbiased watchdog of democracy.
Participants described the workshop as impactful, with resource persons delivering relevant and practical insights. They expressed commitment to applying the knowledge gained, especially in covering the upcoming election.
The workshop concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Participation to attending journalists.
